“It is a truth universally acknowledged…”

Pride and Prejudice. A Novel. By Jane Austen, Author of “Sense and Sensibility,” “Mansfield Park,” etc. London: Richard Bentley, 1833

THE FIRST ONE VOLUME EDITION OF PRIDE AND PREJUDICE.

-------------------

For most budgets, this is the earliest obtainable edition of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, being the fourth edition. The first edition was printed in 1813, the second quickly followed in that same year, and the third was printed in c.1817. It is very difficult to find any of those editions for less than £10,000, and of course, the first edition is significantly more expensive (~£100,000 or more is typical for a nice copy).

Size: 110 x 169 mm (approx.)

Condition:

Near contemporary full calf, rubbed, leather a bit dry, raised bands to spine with compartments lined in gilt. Lacks tooled label. Joints cracked, both boards attached but with the front partially loose, rear board secure. Textually complete with the full text of Pride & Prejudice present with all three parts bound into one as issued. This copy lacks the frontispiece and additional engraved title leaf, but is otherwise complete. It appears to have been bound without these originally. Pencil inscriptions to front free endpaper. No attached bookplates. Mild scattered foxing but generally clean throughout the text block.

A very nice copy.
