A fine edition of the first collected edition of the works of Thomas Gataker (1574–1654), the distinguished English clergyman, theologian, and classical scholar. Gataker, a member of the Westminster Assembly and rector of Rotherhithe, was renowned for his scholarship in biblical criticism and classical philology.
This edition includes an early printing of The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius, alongside his acclaimed commentary on it, one of the most significant early modern interpretations of the Stoic emperor’s philosophical reflections, printed in Greek with a parallel Latin translation alongside significant commentary notes from Gataker. There is a fine engraved frontispiece portrait of Marcus Aurelius facing the main title leaf.

Contemporary full vellum binding, rubbed with some minor discolouration. Both boards securely attached, the binding secure. Book stands securely without shelf lean. Minor shelf and edge wear. Very attractive on the shelf. Bookseller ticket to head of rear pastedown from J.J. Siegfried's Buchhandlung & Antiquariat Zurich. Bookplate of Marci J. Lowe to ffep recto with his subtle blindstamp to the upper right of the same leaf. Second blank torn in gutter, but still attached. Some foxing/spotting throughout, minor. Text mildly toned. A good copy of this scarce first collected edition of Gataker's works, notably including Marcus Aurelius' Meditations.
