FIRST LATIN EDITION of this famous work which illustrates the underground world of Rome, including its catacombs, tombs, painted and inscribed walls, sarcophagi, etc, with a huge quantity of large plates throughout. This is volume two only, of two, but remains highly desirable for its esoteric and interesting content. The set (of the first edition as here) is practically unobtainable on the market below $2,000 USD. Of particular note is the beautiful engraved title.

Condition:
Half calf over marbled paper backed boards with an ink title and volume number in compartments to the spine between raised bands. Binding rubbed and scuffed with some losses of leather to the spine, and losses to the paper backing on the boards, see photos. Both boards attached with cracked joints and hinges, somewhat fragile. Shelf and edge wear. Page edges dulled. No attached bookplate or ownership inscription. Text block with light edge toning, sporadic foxing, and dampstaining to the top edge throughout. Illustrated with numerous plates. Uncollated.
