Millar et al., 1767.

-------------------

A really excellent early edition of Samuel Johnson's important dictionary, here beautifully presented in very finely rebacked bindings very much reminiscent of the Nonesuch Press bindings, here preserving contemporary boards and the original tooled red morocco labels. One of the most excellent octavo editions of Johnson's Dictionary, printed not too long following the original, and by the same printer.

[(1), t.p., 2pp, a1-d3, B1-3Z2, (2)]; [(2), t.p., 4A1-6Z2, (2)]

Contemporary full calf bindings, very finely rebacked preserving earlier tooled red morocco labels. Bindings a little rubbed with some areas of discolouration/sunning, but generally externally excellent and very presentable indeed. Joints secure, hinges very impressively secured whilst preserving the entirety of the original endpapers & pastedowns. Bookplate to front pastedown in both volumes of a Baron crown with stylised initials below, covering an earlier ink ownership inscription in both vols. Text blocks mildly toned, some light spotting in places, but generally internally excellent, the full text without loss of sense. Collates as complete, leaves without standard pagination but with leaf numbering as printed.
