Shirley: A Tale By Currer Bell, Author of "Jane Eyre" [Charlotte Bronte]. Oxford. Newly Printed at the Shakespeare Head Press and Published for the Press by Basil Blackwell in 1931.

A beautiful edition of Charlotte Bronte's Shirley, limited to 1,000 copies only. Here rebound from the original cloth binding to this luxury half calf leather binding over marbled boards.

This edition is based on the first edition of 1849 while being collated with the second edition of 1853, hence the reference to the author's pseudonym of Currer Bell on the title page to be consistent with the early editions.

Size: 160 x 225 mm (approx.)

Condition:

Spines with some light superficial scratches but generally show attractively on the shelf, retaining all four tooled labels. Joints fine with all boards securely attached with the bindings secure and free of shelf lean. Boards near fine. Spotted page edge design with top edges slightly dulled as typical. Contemporary endpapers with the rebinding without any attached bookplates or ownership inscriptions. A very small stain affects from the half title through to pp.9 of the first volume which does not obscure any text. The text blocks are otherwise exceptionally clean and appear to be unread or read very carefully indeed.

A beautiful set of one of Charlotte Bronte's finest works.
