-------------------

All are first editions except for the four volumes of the first series, comprising a total of 16 volumes, near uniformly bound in half calf over marbled boards. First series (1817) second edition, Second series (1818) first edition, Third series (1819) first edition, Fourth series (1832) first edition.

-------------------

These four series of The Tales of My Landlord comprise several well known novels, including The Black Dwarf, The Tale of Old Mortality, The Heart of Midlothian, The Bridge of Lammermoor, A Legend of Montrose, Count Robert of Paris, and Castle Dangerous. Of these, The Heart of Midlothian and The Bridge of Lammermoor were the most successful, with Old Mortality considered by modern critics to be Sir Walter Scott's best work. Here we find all but the first two listed in first edition form, with those in second edition form.

Size: 120 x 179 mm (approx., each)

Condition:

All volumes are bound in half calf over marbled boards, though are not uniform on close inspection. The first and second series are very nearly uniformly bound with the third series being a bit more different though with the gilt bands at uniform heights. The fourth series volumes are larger in depth and also differently bound. Despite these differences, the four series still look like a uniform set on the shelf at a normal viewing distance. Tooled labels lacking to all volumes of the first, second, and third series, and volume two of the fourth series (only). Some loss to the leather backstrips, most notably to the base of the second volume of the first series. Spines dulled with discolouration though would likely aesthetically benefit from a clean and the application of a leather conditioner. Some parts appear to have been reglued. Shelf wear and wear to extremities. Bookplate to front pastedown of each volume. Some foxing affecting the first and last few leaves in some, but not all, volumes. Generally internally fairly clean, mildly toned. The majority of volumes are internally very good without any foxing.
