AN INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT HISTORICAL RECORD OF THE AMERICAN WAR FOR INDEPENDENCE, EARLY PRESIDENTIAL ADMINISTRATIONS, WESTWARD EXPANSION AND NATIVE AMERICAN RELATIONS, THE 1803 PURCHASE OF LOUISIANA, THE WAR OF 1812, US ECONOMIC HISTORY INCLUDING THE FOUNDING OF THE US BANK WITH AN ANALYSIS OF ITS IMPACT ON THE NATION, THE EMERGENCE OF THE FEDERALISTS AND REPUBLICAN PARTY, AND MUCH, MUCH MORE!

.
It is difficult to understate the significance of the Annual Register as a first hand historical account of some of the most important events in modern Western history. There is so much history packed in to these volumes, many things so far unmentioned include: the Napoleonic wars, the French revolution, international affairs, social, scientific, and cultural developments, notable inventions, a record of natural disasters, significant legal cases and legislative developments, the colonisation efforts of European powers and the state of colonies, biographical accounts of important persons, statistical data such as population levels, economic indicators, etc.
.
Included in the set is a very early printing of the American declaration of independence in the 1776 volume (published in 1787) which is one of the first British printings of the declaration. There are detailed accounts of the motivations behind the American colonists' fight for independence including an analysis of the impact of key figures such as George Washington and Benjamin Franklin. The Annual Register also documented the process of the establishment of the United States as an independent nation with discussions on drafting and ratifying the U.S. Constitution, the formation of the federal government, and the early political struggles faced by the young nation. It tracks foreign relations between the United States and other nations during its formative years. It provides an analysis and commentary on the presidencies of early U.S. presidents such as George Washington, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson in terms of their policies, challenges, and contributions to the development of America.
.
The 1803 purchase of Louisiana is extensively covered, as are the acquisitions of other new territories and the displacement of Native American tribes. It explores the impact of these expansions on Native American communities and the conflicts that arose as a result. The war of 1812 is documented with accounts of major battles, motivations behind the conflict, and an analysis of the war for both nations involved.
Another significant element of the Annual Register is an account of the emergence of political factions such as the Federalists and the Democratic Republicans and an analysis of the ideological differences and conflicts which shaped the early American political landscape.
.
And finally, but certainly not exhaustively, there are some very interesting mentions of notable published works. An example is the first published mention of Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations, and a review of Edward Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, and much more of course.

Condition:
Light sporadic browning. Ex library stamp to verso of title pages, small and non-obtrusive. Largely without the wear one might expect for an ex library set and generally in very good condition. Marbled endpapers and edges with contemporary half calf with marbled boards. Some damage to two raised bands on volume five with slight loss to raised band on volume forty-five. Several later volumes with cracked joints but with the vast majority of volumes without significant wear to joints with all boards attached. Some rubbing and signs of wear with some minor loss to corners. Some spines chipped with minor loss. Internally very good, some volumes with minor foxing but mostly very clean and tidy. Bindings to cloth volumes are in near fine to fine condition, these bound contemporary to the others, probably in the early to mid 20th century with the majority of the bindings probably bound in the early 1800s.
A very handsome set indeed!
