The Art of Love by Gouge de Cessiere is a poem inspired by Ovid's work of the same title. It is a satirical poem about seduction and love which are advocated as virtuous. This example is in a particularly beautiful Louis XVI style binding with a hand coloured title page.

[i-xxxii, 261pp].


Spine with very minor wear, and with few very small holes only visible upon close inspection. Both boards attached with wear to joints and cracked hinges. Boards with leather fragments peeled off and some small wormholes. Shelf and edge wear. Corners lightly turned in. Minor dulling to page edges. Potentially lacking first and last endpaper if called for. Pencil and pen inscription on preliminary. Number stamp on the reverso of the preliminary. Title page hand coloured with light toning and some foxing. The title page originally come sprinted in black and red, thus, the assumption is that the hand colouring was done after printing. Pencil inscription to the bottom of the title page. Original advertisement present. Lacking all plates. Text block lightly toned with very minor / minor foxing. Contains some very few, very sporadic pen inscriptions / marks throughout. Pencil inscription on rear endpaper. Small spot of residue (potentially previously torn off paper) on rear pastedown and even smaller spot on facing endpaper.
