The Comedies of Terence. Translated into English Prose. To which is prefixed, Some Account of the Author, and of the Dramatic Poetry of the Antients. By Mr. Gordon. London: Printed for Thomas Longman, et al., 1752.

-------------------

A very rare printing of Terence's comedies translated into English for which we could not trace any sales records. Bound in 18th century full calf and containing all six of his extant plays.

His plays were heavily used to learn to speak and write in Latin during the Middle Ages and Renaissance Period, and in some instances were imitated by William Shakespeare.

Size: 107 x 177 mm (approx.)

Condition:

[xx, 289pp, 3pp (advertisements)]

18th century probably original or very near contemporary full calf, rubbed with minor loss. Without any external identifying features (no tooled label etc), though appears to have never been bound with a label. Joints rubbed and exposed but uncracked with both boards securely attached. Shelf wear with some loss to head and foot of spine. Endpapers edge toned as commensurate with the calf binding, mildly toned through the text block but generally very clean and internally very good or better. No attached bookplates or ownership inscriptions. Page edges very good with a few spots of foxing not affecting the text block.
