The Complete Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson Comprising His Essays, Lectures, Poems, and Orations. In Two Volumes. London: George Bell and Sons, 1876-1879.

-------------------

A beautiful set in notably excellent condition of the complete works of Ralph Waldo Emerson. A notably early edition of his complete works, printed during his lifetime. WorldCat records the date of this edition as 1879 and so it is possible that the 1876 year is a misprint in the second volume. This would be most probable as some of his essays were first published in Boston in 1876 and so for a complete edition it would make sense to be published a bit after this, especially for being printed in London.

This is therefore one of the first editions of the collected works of Ralph Waldo Emerson, and certainly one of the very earliest printings in the UK.

Size: 122 x 183 mm (approx., each)

Condition:

[viii, pp.1-494]; [vi, pp.1-448]

Uniform near contemporary half calf over marbled boards with matching marbled endpapers and page edges. Spines uniformly sunned with some extremely light rubbing. The volumes show very well indeed on the shelf and are very attractive, retaining the tooled red and green morocco labels which are in fine condition. All joints fine with all boards securely attached. The boards are in notably excellent condition and do not suffer from the usual scuffs etc for similar bindings. No shelf lean. Page edges near fine with top edges dulled as typical. No attached bookplates or ownership inscriptions. Endpapers foxed but very clean and bright through the text blocks. Collated as complete through both volumes including the half titles.

An excellent set.
