The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire by Edward Gibbon. A New Edition, in Four Volumes. London: Jones & Company, 1829.

-------------------

A beautiful copy of Edward Gibbon's magnum opus of ancient history, here presented in four uniform contemporaneously bound volumes with a particularly nice engraved title in the each volume in addition to the usual main title pages, as well as the usual foldout maps present in these early editions.

Size: 142 x 219 mm (approx., each)

Condition:

[(3), frontis, t.p., t.p., iii-xxx, i, foldout map, 501pp, (3)]; [(3), t.p., t.p., foldout map, 486pp, (3)]; [(3), t.p., t.p., 538pp, (3)]; [(3), t.p., t.p., 498pp, (3)]

Uniform contemporary half calf over marbled paper backed boards, the spines finely tooled in gilt, each retaining its original tooled morocco labels, some of which are fragmentary, appearing to have been reglued at some time, a little naively. Bindings a little rubbed, some minor loss to head of vols two and three spines. All boards are securely attached, bindings are all secure, and without shelf lean. Shelf and edge wear. Top edges uniformly dulled as typical. Edges contemporaneously marbled, matching the paper backed boards. Without any attached bookplates. Some foxing, particularly to foldout maps (as typical). Foldout map in first volume torn at joints as often, second map without tears. All volumes collate as complete including the additional engraved titles, according to the WorldCat copy. Generally very clean throughout the text blocks.
