A beautiful set of Mudie's Feathered Tribes of the British Islands, to include hand-coloured engraved frontispieces and 17 beautiful plates. This is the first edition and is presented here in very attractive modern half morocco fine bindings. "The vignettes on the title pages [of Mudie's Feathered Tribes] are the first successful specimens of G. Baxter's polychromatic printing. This first edition is therefore sought after by collectors of Baxter-types" (Mullens & Swann).

Condition:
Half brown calf over cloth backed boards with gilt titles and volume numbers in compartments to the spines between raised bands. Bindings near fine with very minor signs of wear. All boards securely attached. Shelf and edge wear. Marbled page edges somewhat dulled, and the colour of the page edges is different, volume one has blue marbled edges and volume two has more brownish marbled edges. Text blocks generally clean with light toning and sporadic foxing. Plates are hand coloured. Small repair to the title page. Uncollated.
