The first edition of the genesis of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Fellowship of the Ring, complete with the foldout map at the rear and the map of the Shire to the verso of pp.24. Lacking its original dust jacket as often, else a nice example.

Original publisher's red cloth binding with spine faded though without loss. Front board very good, a little worn, with some superficial marks to the rear board. Joints very good with both boards securely attached, hinges fine. Shelf wear with a little loss to corners, bottom corners slightly deformed. Top page edge coloured red as published, all edges generally very good to near fine. Binding slightly cocked but without shelf lean. With an early bookseller sticker to the foot of the front pastedown of Bowes & Bowes, Cambridge. Pencil date of 1992 to head of front free endpaper else without ownership inscriptions or bookplates. Ffep with offset toning, else fine throughout the text block, foldout map near fine.
