[(3), t.p., *3-*6, A1-4B2, 1ff., (3)]
Contemporary full calf, boards panelled in a Cambridge style design, the spine finely tooled in gilt contemporaneously. The spine retains its original tooled red morocco label. The binding is in the most remarkable state of preservation, unrestored and completely original. This is easily the greatest condition of a 17th century binding we have ever encountered or are likely to ever encounter, it really is something very special. Light shelf wear, but with the corners remaining sharp. Both boards are securely attached with light rubbing at the joints, partially starting at extremities. The binding is secure and stands without shelf lean. There are no attached bookplates or ownership inscriptions, though there is a shelf reference mark to the upper left of the front pastedown in the hand of Samuel Sandys, circa the early 1700s, and a light pencil inscription to the ffep verso, also a shelf reference. There is some minor foxing and edge toning to the endpapers as typical. Leaf 3E3 is slightly larger at the upper edges, leaving these edges protruding at the upper fore-edge and top edge as pictured, this leaf is a little dog-eared; This is as it was printed and so is not a defect. The text block as a whole is extraordinarily clean, generally from marginalia, foxing, damp staining, etc., though with the small odd mark to the occasional leaf as one might expect, but really in a great state of preservation internally too.
The greatest obtainable copy in a fine contemporary binding of this important first edition in English of the Historie of the Counsel of Trent.
