A New and Authentic History of England: From the Remotest Period of Intelligence to the Close of the Year 1768: Containing a Particular and Circumstantial Account of Every Interesting Occurrence, and Memorable Character Relative to the Annals of Great Britain, Both at Home and Abroad. By Hugh Clarendon. London: J. Cooke, [1768?].

-------------------

A very rare work published around the same time as the most important historical works such as David Hume's History of England and Edward Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. This copy lacks both title pages but WorldCat puts the date as circa 1768, and that is of course where the history as described in this book ends and so would be published circa that time. The bindings are also contemporaneous to c.1768 and are original. A beautiful set with the text collated as complete, bound without any plates.

Size: 220 x 267 mm (approx., each)

Condition:

[1ff. (dedication), i-vi (introduction), pp.1-570, pp.573-593 (index)]; [pp.3-572, 16pp. (index), 1ff. (directions to the binder), 8pp. (List of Subscribers)]

Contemporary full calf, both volumes retaining their original tooled morocco labels. Bindings rubbed, particularly to the raised bands and extremities on the spine, and across all boards. Joints rubbed, cracked in places, but with all boards attached; the front board of the first volume very slightly fragile. Shelf and edge wear as typical. Page edges dulled with some discolouration as typical. Loss to corners. Very slightly shelf lean but with both volumes vertically stable when independently and together. Both volumes lack their title page and both volumes are bound without plates which are called for according to the list of plates, but here are all lacking. Without any attached bookplates or ownership inscriptions, but with the partial remnants of one removed from the front pastedown in the first volume (only). Text blocks mildly toned throughout both volumes but the full text without loss of sense. Numerous mispaginations throughout, especially in the indexes, but textually collates as complete according to the WorldCat copy.
