The History of Scotland, from the Year 1423, to the Year 1542. Containing the Lives and Reigns of James I. II. III. IV. and V. By William Drummond, Esq; of Hawthornden. Glasgow: Printed by R. Urie, MDCCXLIX (1749).
-------------------
Provenance:
Bookplate of Clan Gregor with the war cry "Ard Choille" and with the Scottish Gaelic motto "srioghail mo dhream" (royal is my race). The armorial crest depicts a crown wearing unicorn and a stag (?) holding a shield with tree forming a cross with a sword. the sword's tip has a crown directly on it. Just above the tree there is a shield with an open palmed hand. Above the main shield there is a lion head wearing a crown.
The crest is also associated with the clan chief / the MacGregor baronets. This particular baronet title was created on the 3rd of July in 1795 for John Murray, who was a member of the MacGregor clan in Scotland. King James VI, forbade this clan branch to bear their own surname, which was later revoked by Charles II, and then later restored during the reign of William and Mary. Only in 1822 did the family obtain a Royal licence to use their family surname.
The list of the Baronets is as follows: Lieutenant-Colonel Sir John Murray (1745-1822); Major-General Sir Evan John Murray (1785-1841); Sir John Atholl Bannatyne Murray-MacGregor (1810-1851); Rear-Admiral Sir Malcolm Murray-MacGregor (1834-1879); Captain Sir Malcolm MacGregor (1873-1958); Brigadier Sir Gregor MacGregor (1925-20003); etc.
