Provenance:

Bookplate of Arthur C. Headlam with the Latin motto "intellectu et innocentia" (by intellect and innocence). Likely the Arthur Cayley Headlam (1862 - 1947) who was the Bishop of Gloucester from 1923 to 1945. Arthur was a theologian who taught at King's College London and wrote books on the subject.

Condition: 

Spines unevenly sunned with very minor rubbing. All tooled labels present with very small fragments lacking. All boards attached with minor wear to joints and hinges. Board with minor scuffing and rubbing. Shelf and edge wear. Dulling to page edges. Bookplate attached to front pastedown in all volumes. Short pencil inscription on provenance in volume one. Maps with light toning and minor foxing, and with very few very small tears to edges. Map of the 'Great Harbour of Syracuse' in volume three appears incomplete as on the left the text end on "Sketch taken from the". 'Plan of Syracuse and the Adjacent Country' with prominent tears to nearly all folds, pieces attached very loosely in few places. Text blocks very clean with light toning to edges.
