A beautiful copy of Calvin's Institutes, printed within Calvin's lifetime in a stunning contemporary binding dated 1562 with the initials "CVB" to the front board with a central panel depicting the Crucifixion. An extremely rare edition.

Collates as complete including the original rear blank (O10). Contemporary full brown calf over wooden boards with paper label to the spine; the binding is dated 1562. Binding rubbed and scuffed with some worming. Both boards attached with joint and hinges cracked. Shelf and edge wear. Shelf lean. Page edges toned. Ink fore-edge inscription, faded. Pencil inscriptions to front and rear pastedown. Text block very clean with light edge toning and occasional foxing, dampstaining and sporadic ink marginalia. Some wormholing. C5 with some extra paper at the bottom as it is untrimmed. Z7 with small closed tear to top margin.
