Provenance:

Gilt crest to both boards of the Fortia Family. Depicts a coat of arms with a simple crown made of dots above four sections, depicting a tower on a mountain of sinople and a swan, with the motto "Illustriss D De Fortia De Piles Baro De Baumes" (the most illustrious Lord de Fortia de Piles, Baron of Baumes).

Prize bookplate reading "Ex Munificentia Perillustris, Ac Nobilissimae Dominae Ioannae de Thoulon, de Sain-te Ialle; & Perillustris, ac nobilissi-mi Domini de Baumes, de Fortia, praemium pro graco 4 ? in the ? ? de virclui tulit die 10 ma Septembris 1677. Ludovicus de Sabatier Prof." (Through the genorosity of the illustrious and most noble lady Ioanne de Baumes, of Fort, the prize for Greek literature, worth 4 ?, in the ? ? of virtue, was awarded on the 10th September 1677. Louis de Sabatier prof).

Also, an attached blindstamp with "IHS" to centre with a cross above and a motto surrounding (illegible due to loss). The IHS, or sometimes IHC, stands for iota-eta-sigma, or the first letters of the name of Jesus Christ in the Greek alphabet.

Contemporary full morocco with gilt title and designs between raised bands, and crests to both boards. Binding in excellent condition with very minor rubbing and some marks to boards. Very minor loss to the bottom of the backstrip. Corners very lightly turned-in. All page edges gilt, dulled, and with some marks. Contemporary bookplate and blindstamp attached to front pastedown. Wormholes from front pastedown through to the front blanks. Bottom of the title page lacking, else, text block appears complete, rear blanks lacking. Text block extremely clean throughout. Some occasional text block separation but with all leaves securely attached.
