A very rare edition of the Bible which is highly desirable, with beautiful illustrated capitals at the beginnings of each book. This is volume one (only) thus containing the books from Genesis through to Jeremiah 1:8. This edition in a particularly remarkable binding sold at Dominic Winter Auctions 14th June 2023 lot 225 and another at Christie's 9th March 2016 lot 310, else sales records for this edition are scarce.

Spine warped with some tears, loss, and marks. Very small wormholes to the spine and joints. Tooled label present with some wear. Both boards attached with joints and hinges starting or cracked. Boards rubbed with marks and some small loss to leather. Prominent shelf and edge wear. Shelf lean. Text block lightly toned with sporadic minor foxing and marks.


Text block condition notes: 

Some leaves are trimmed more than others causing small loss to text in some instances. Sporadic minor tears to leaf extremities, some of which causing some very minor loss.

Approx. 70mm tear to the inner margin of the last leaf of "the translators to the reader". Approx. 70mm tear horizontally across pp.17/18 affecting text white remaining legible.

Some more prominent tears and loss to extremities of the following leaves according to page numbers: pp.19/20, pp.269-272, pp.563/565, pp.613/614, pp.659-664, and pp.683-686. Small tears and large sections of loss to the inner side of pp.503-506. Bottom corner lacking from pp.649/650. Tears to leaf edges of pp. 671-674. Loss to top corners of pp. 695/6. Large horizontal tear to pp.699/700, going nearly fully across the bottom. Loss to the bottom of pp.745/6. Pp.409/410 lacking the inner bottom corner. 

Few marks to pp.176-177, text remains legible. Dark marks to pp.485-489 (text still legible). Two marks to pp.565, one mark covering text of the margin notes, and the second over main text which is still legible. Large ink stains to pp.589-594. Ink stain to the top leaf edges of pp.641-650.

Very small wormhole from the front pastedown to pp.458, and another from pp.507 to the rear pastedown.

Page number of pp.287 misprinted as 281, and of pp.405 misprinted as 403.

Light damp stain the outer leaf edge from pp.323 to pp.358; and from pp.383 to pp.404

Pp.349/350 detached and with some tears and creasing to edges. Leaves from pp.351 to 360 partially detached to about half way from the top. 

White tape covering the outer side edge of pp.649 which is coverings some of the margin notes. White tape repair to side leaf edge of pp.685/686. White tape attached to the bottom of pp.700. Large white tape repairs to edges of pp.745/6. 

 


*Text block ends on the Book of Jeremiah chapter I, verse 8. According to Herbert's bibliography the total number of pages should be 1456 (the first 746 being present as according to the collation).
