-------------------

The Parson's Counsellor by Sir Simon Degge, first published in 1676 and later revised into its final edition in 1820, is a significant treatise divided into two books. Here is the fifth edition printed in 1695. The first book outlines the procedures that parsons and vicars must follow to obtain a preferment, detailing the duties imposed by such appointments and various regulations clergymen must adhere to. The second book delves into the intricate matters of tithes, offerings, mortuaries, and other church duties, elucidating relevant canon, common, and statute laws, as well as the courts and suits involving tithes. Sir Simon Degge, a distinguished judge and legal expert, authored this influential work, drawing upon his extensive experience in the legal profession and his commitment to the principles of the Church of England. The book served as a leading textbook on its subject matter for many years, reflecting Degge's expertise and his dedication to upholding the practices and regulations of the Church.

Contemporary full calf binding without external identification marks, probably as bound. Binding rubbed and a little dry, but with the binding secure, both boards securely attached, and without shelf lean. Boards slightly warped outward, also likely as bound. Boards with a blindstamped panelled design, probably bound in Oxford. Pencil ownership inscription to front blank, and an ink ownership inscription to head of title page. Dampstain in gutter from the beginning, reducing through to C1, else internally bright and very clean throughout, the full text being legible. Collates as complete including the advertisement leaf 2F8, and the scarce message from the editor bound to the verso of the title page. Pastedowns detached from the inner boards but without loss to those blanks. A lovely copy, without restoration, contemporaneously bound, and thus rather charming indeed.
