A beautifully bound example in remarkable condition of Laurence Sterne's magnum opus, Tristram Shandy.

Provenance:

Bookplate of Francis Pigott Esq. with the motto "labore et virtute" (by labour and virtue). The armorial crest depicts three swans (?) looking down, two lions, and six hammers (?) in seven sections surrounding an inner shield with a cross and fiver diamonds. Above the shield there is a greyhound facing the left. There are also floral motifs surrounding the shield.

Spines lightly rubbed and very lightly cracked; they present very well. All tooled labels present. All boards securely attached with very minor wear to joints and hinges. Boards with very minor scuffing. Minor marks to the front board of volume three. Corners lightly turned in. Shelf and edge wear. dulling to page edges. Bookplate attached to front pastedown in all volumes. Volumes one and two labelled as the "ninth edition" on the title pages, and volumes three to six labelled as "new edition" on title pages. Text blocks extremely clean with with very sporadic very minor foxing.
