First duodecimo edition, printed in the same year as the folio edition, of Alexander Pope's important English translation of Homer's Odyssey, remaining to this day one of the greatest translations from the original Greek for Pope's retention of the original poetic style.
A fantastic set, illustrated with 24 engraved plates, in wonderful contemporary bindings with engraved head and tail pieces. This set also contains Homer's Frogs and Mice bound in to the rear of the fifth volume, with separate pagination.

Contemporary full calf bindings finely tooled in gilt to spines with boards lined in gilt. Rubbed with losses at extremities, shelf and edge wear. Lacking most tooled labels, with spines dulled with gilt loss. Joints rubbed, many cracked, with all boards attached except the front board of volume two which is detached, some fragile. Volume one with some dampstaining throughout. Text blocks mildly toned but generally clean, free of foxing, underlining, writing, etc. Lacks the frontispiece to the first volume (as often) else collates as complete, including all original blanks. Also bound with all of the very extensive called for advertisements through each volume.
