This painting is attributed to the circle of Antonio Travi, a prominent Genoese artist. This work exhibits a rich narrative structure. The composition centres on the Risen Christ appearing to Mary Magdalene, often referred to as Noli Me Tangere, after the translation of Christ's words in St. Jerome's Vulgate of John 20:17. The scene unfolds in a carefully articulated landscape, with a grotto-like tomb in the middle ground, angels visible at its entrance, and a distant fortified cityscape, most probably referencing Jerusalem, though appearing a bit more Romanesque than typical, possibly in the spirit of the Counter-Reformation tradition typical with Italian post-Tridentine art.
The interplay of light and shadow enhances the dramatic tension, reflecting Travi’s association with Genoese Baroque traditions and his probable influence by the school of Bernardo Strozzi. The scene is further enlivened by secondary figures, resting Roman guards and spectators which provide a narrative counterpoint to the central sacred moment.

Condition:
The painted surface shows some signs of age, including minor craquelure, but is well presented, some minor losses at the extremities as typical, but this is more in line with the frame being slightly larger than the canvas requires. The colours remain vibrant.
Canvas relined as typical. A well preserved 17th century painting which shows beautifully.
