The Swiss Family Robinson; or, Adventures of a Shipwrecked Family on a Desolate Island. A New and Unabridged Translation [by Johann David Wyss]. With An Introduction From the French of Charles Nodier. London: T. Nelson and Sons, 1870.

-------------------

A very rare edition for which we could not trace any other examples, here beautifully finely bound by Speakman in full red morocco, probably bound in 1871 as a prize for Michael J. Flynn and then additional gilt stamped to the bottom of the front board for presumably his son, Frederick T. J. Flynn in 1902.

Size: 133 x 188 mm (approx.)

Condition:

[pp.i-x, i, pp.8-690]

Sumptuous full red morocco binding with intricate gilt tooling to the spine in compartments between raised bands with gilt borders to the boards and attractive gilt turn-ins. Spine lightly sunned but remains bright and attractive. Spine a little rubbed, mostly to extremities. Rubbing across the joints but with all joints secure with both boards securely attached. No shelf lean. A few spots of discolouration to both boards, notably covering, but not obscuring, the 'yn' in 'Flynn' at the foot of the front board. Shelf and edge wear with some light loss to corners. All edges gilt with a few scratches etc as typical but the page edges remain bright and attractive. Without any attached bookplates or ownership inscriptions. A few spots of discolouration to the first and last few leaves with a few spots of foxing very sporadically affecting a few leaves throughout, more so towards the end of the book (the final 6-7pp). Tear to pp.33-34 without textual loss. Title to main title page underlined in pencil.
