Henry Sacheverell (1674-1724) was an English high church Anglican clergyman. In 1709 he made some controversial speeches which criticised the Whig government for undermined the authority of the Church of England and for being too lenient towards Catholics and dissenters. His speeches often framed his criticisms within broader political and religious contexts. For example, he linked Catholics to the Gunpowder Plot (1605) by claiming that Catholics still posed a threat to monarchy and government. He also compared dissenters to the radicals of the English Civil War which caused the execution of Charles I., as he believed that dissenters would cause political and religious divisions within the country. An order was released banning the printing of his sermons by the Lord Mayor. Sacheverell went again the order and had his sermons printed independently. The government took action against him resulting in the impeachment trial in 1710. He was found guilty and was given a lenient sentence which prevented him from preaching for three years.
