The Tryal of Thomas Earl of Strafford, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Upon an Impeachment of High Treason By The Commons Assembled in Parliament, In the Name of Themselves, and of All the Commons of England, Begun in Westminster-Hall... By John Rushworth. London. 1700.

-------------------

The second edition of John Rushworth's fascinating complete transcript of the 17th century trial of Thomas Wentworth for high treason, beautifully bound in full panelled calf reminiscent of a Cambridge panelled binding. This trial was a very significant event in English history as the prelude to the English civil war and execution of King Charles I, who himself was beheaded eight years after ordering Thomas Wentworth's execution.

Size: 215 x 323 x 51 mm (approx.)

Condition:

[6ff, 786pp]

Full Cambridge panelled calf binding in folio format, rebacked with a circa 1850s spine preserving the probably original or near contemporary boards. Rear board securely attached with the front joint very fragile but attached with some joints split. Bookplate to front pastedown and ink ownership inscription dated to March 1925 to ffep verso. Very clean through the text block, mildly toned as typical but essentially as excellent as one would hope for. Top page edge dulled, others very good. Slight shelf lean but remains vertically stable.
