Cours De Littérature Dramatique, Ou De L'Usage Des Passions Dans Le Drame, Par  M. Saint-Marc Girardin. Tome Premier. Paris; Charpentier, Libraire-Editeur; 1843.
Course in Dramatic Literature, or the Use of Emotions in Drama, by Mr. Saint-Marc Girardin. Volume One. Paris; Charpentier, Publisher-Bookseller; 1843.

FIRST EDITION of this classic work which examines dramatic passions, discussing the mode in which they are treated in ancient and modern drama, poetry and romance. The book, a defence of the ancients against the moderns, "did not", according to the Encyclopaedia Britannica Eleventh Edition, "take into account the fact that only the best of ancient literature has come down to us." Girardin's oeuvre was, overall, very hostile toward Romanticism. Volume one only.

-------------------

Provenance: Bookplate of John Burton Philips. The crest shows a crown wearing lion holding a diamond shape. Burton built Heath House in Staffordshire in 1836. The house was designed by Thomas Johnson in the Tudor style.

Size: 110 x 175 mm (approx.)

Condition:

Volume one only of a larger set where the other volumes were published in subsequent years all the way up until 1863, and so it is rather common for these to be in single volumes only. Spine with very minor wear only visible upon very close inspection. Tooled label present. Both boards securely attached with very minor wear to joints and hinges. Boards with very minor superficial scratches. Pastedown, endpapers, half title and title page foxed. Bookplate attached to front pastedown. Text block with sporadic minor foxing. Uncollated but appears complete.
