This is the first edition of the Wandering Jew, published between 1844 and 1845 in three volumes as a serial publication. It is a work of fiction; a part of the historical and gothic genres. It follows the cursed character Rodin, condemned to wander the earth for eternity as a result of a blasphemous act committed during the Crucifixion. The story is interwoven with various subplots, conspiracies, and mysteries, including a secret society and a hidden treasure. The novel explores themes of eternal punishment, divine justice, and the nature of suffering.

Condition: 

Spines lightly rubbed causing some discolouration. Five of six tooled labels present; numbered volume lacking from volume two. All boards securely attached with very minor wear to joints and hinges. Boards with minor scuffing and rubbing; small pieces of marbled boards lacking from both board of volume three and rear board of volume one. Prominent shelf and edge wear. Minor dulling to page edges. Title pages lightly toned with very minor foxing. Endpapers with minor foxing. Text blocks fairly clean with light toning and sporadic very minor foxing. Small number of leaves more toned than others. Bound without plates, else complete.
