-------------------

An important publication of the works of Ariosto which is notably scarce. We can only trace only a few sales records of this very rare set in the last few decades, including Bonhams 18th Nov 2003 lot 4 and Christie's 21st May 2010 lot 10. The engraved title pages in this set are particularly excellent, as is this type of paper used which is excellent.

Uniform contemporary full vellum bindings with titles and dates written in ink to the spines. Very small minor wormhole entrance cites to the bindings. Joints very slightly rubbed with all boards securely attached and the bindings secure. Some newspaper in English from the Daily Mirror pasted to the rear board to the second volume dated 1938. Rear board of the first volume with some damp staining, not affecting the text block. Page edges slightly nibbled at by bookworms. Some light damp staining to first and last few leaves and very faintly throughout, but generally very clean through the text blocks, though with the leaves creased as is typical for this paper. Pastedowns beginning to or fully separated from the boards. Few minor closed tears to leaf edges. First few leaves stained at the fore-edge in the second volume, not affecting the text, with the last few leaves similarly stained and discoloured. The final two leaves torn with some loss in the second volume. Rear blanks fragmented, one lacking, else, the volumes collate as textually complete as according to the WorldCat copy, but are bound without any plates.
