James Thomson (1700 – 1748) was a Scottish poet and playwright, known for his poems The Seasons and The Castle of Indolence, and for the lyrics of "Rule, Britannia!"


This is a fantastic edition with 12 very fine copperplate engravings by J. Neagle, I. Heath, Anker Smith, Grignion, T. Cook, Medland, and I.K. Sherwin after illustrations by Metz, Stothard, E.F. Burney, and J. Paton (frontis).

Near contemporary full marbled calf leather with tooled black morocco labels to the spines in gilt compartments. Some wear and rubbing to spines with some loss at the heads. Joints rubbed with all boards securely attached. Boards scuffed but generally very good. Light shelf wear. No shelf lean. Page edges very good with top edges dulled as typical. Bookplate of G.E. Maunsell to front pastedown of each volume. Collated as complete through each volume with the full suite of 12 engraved copper plates throughout. Endpapers toned and lightly foxed. Some very light foxing throughout but generally very clean. Verso of plates often more prominently toned.
