-------------------
Paolo Segneri (1624-1694) was an influential Italian Jesuit preacher, missionary, and ascetical writer. Born in Nettuno, he overcame initial resistance from his father to join the Society of Jesus, where he was mentored by notable figures like Oliva and Sforza Pallavicino. After studying humanities and theology, he embarked on a remarkable preaching career, first in major cathedrals and later conducting popular missions, known for his eloquence and holiness. His works, including "Quaresimale," had a profound impact on the Italian pulpit. Segneri's oratory skills drew large audiences, and he received remarkable graces throughout his career. His influence was such that he is considered one of Italy's greatest orators, following in the footsteps of figures like St. Bernadine of Siena and Savonarola. His dedication to reforming the art of preaching left a lasting legacy, and he was known for his humility despite his many successes.

Two volumes of an original four. Full vellum, discoloured and dulled with some loss to the spines, peeling at the top of the second volume. Shelf wear & wear to extremities. Some staining to boards but generally good overall. Bookplate of Monsignor Dean Langan to ffep verso of both volumes. Backstrip detached from the text block in first volume exposing some early printed binder's waste fragments also with the pastedown detached from the front board making one think an extra blank is present or one is missing from the other volume, but this is not the case. Some very minor foxing and dampstaining through the text blocks but generally these remain very good and largely very clean. Boards all attached to their respective bindings securely. Slight shelf lean of both volumes.
