Sancti Aurelii Augustini Hipponensis Episcopi Operum. [...]. Opera et Studio Monachorum Ordinis Sancti Benedicti e Congregatione S. Mauri. Editio Nova a multis mendis purgata. Antwerpiae: Sumptibus Societatis, 1700, folios.

A MAGNIFICENT FOLIO SET OF THE BEST EDITION OF SAINT AUGUSTINE'S COMPLETE WORKS: THE FAMOUS ST MAUR EDITION.

-------------------

This monumental edition was the first comprehensive and philologically serious edition of Augustine’s complete works, systematically distinguishing authentic, dubious, and spurious texts, and remained the authoritative edition of Augustine's works well into the 20th century and is still a valuable reference today, showing just how excellent the scholarship of the St. Maur Benedictines was.

This edition marked a turning point in patristic scholarship, laying the groundwork for modern Augustine studies and influencing both Catholic and Protestant theology on the exact threshold between the early modern and the modern period. It remained the standard reference for over two centuries and was later reprinted in Migne’s Patrologia Latina. This is the corrected edition, scarcely encountered, released the same year as the release of the final volume of the first edition, this 1700 edition being more desirable for its corrections.

Contemporary full calf bindings, finely tooled in gilt in compartments between raised bands, very attractive on the shelf. A little rubbed, but generally excellent, as pictured. All boards securely attached, bindings secure. A beautiful large set of folios. This set contains ten volumes bound into seven, and does not include the final tome which is usually lacking.

A few errors in signatures as printed, but no errors in leaf ordering in the bindings. Lacks a few blanks, typical when multiple volumes are bound into one. A few volumes have a part one and a part two where the collation continues uninterrupted, including the part two title leaf. Each volume collates as complete with all textual leaves present. Text blocks toned, but generally clean throughout. "Arullier" inscription to head of final blank in fourth volume. Ex ownership stickers to boards and a few leaves internally, including titles, pictured, but generally non-intrusive.

A lovely example of this monumental and important edition of Saint Augustine's works, very rarely encountered, especially in contemporary bindings in such excellent condition.
