C. Crispi Sallustii Opera Quae Supersunt, Omnia. Ex Recensione Gottlieb Cortii. Glasguae: Robertus et Andreas Foulis, 1751.

The Works of Sallust, printed by the Foulis Press in 1751.

-------------------

A nice copy of one of the earliest publications by the famous Foulis Press. This is a compilation of several of Sallust's works, including his most important works the "War Against Catiline" and "The Jugurthine War". These concern the plots to overthrow the Roman Senate, with Sallust commentating on the moral decline of Rome, characterising Catiline as a symbol of this decline, with The Jugurthine War showing this through the lens of the Roman conquest of the Numidian king Jugurtha.

Condition:

[(2), h.t., t.p., A1-2X3, (2)]

Early 19th century full calf binding, spine finely tooled in gilt, retaining its original tooled red morocco label. Binding rubbed with the spine a little sunned, but remains attractive nonetheless. Joints rubbed, front joints cracked with both boards attached but the front board very fragile, near detached. All edges marbled, top edge a little dulled as typical. Without any attached bookplates, some loss in gutter to marbled endpaper and pastedown at front (only). Newer endpapers toned and a little foxed, else exceptionally clean throughout the text block.
