Publius Virgilius Maro: Virgilii Opera, Iam emendatior. Amstelodami, Apud Joannem Janssonium, 1650.

The Works of Virgil, including the Aeneid, Georgics, etc. Published in 1650 by the notable printer, Jan Jansson [below]. Bound in a beautiful illuminated manuscript binding with a particularly notable engraved title page.

-------------------

Jan Jansson [Johannes Janssonius (1588-1664)] was the son of a printer and bookseller and from 1612 onwards worked as a book publisher in Amsterdam until his death in 1664. He famously produced maps, with his most famous occurring in the 1630s, Atlas Major. The title pages of this publisher are of particular note for the quality of the engravings present on them. This example of Virgil's works has a very finely engraved title page which is particularly beautiful.

Size: 65 x 115 x 25 mm (approx.)

Condition:

Minor wear to handwritten label on spine but not affecting legibility. Binding with some discolouration but remains very good. Contemporary pastedowns and endpapers, probably circa the same time as the binding which is not original, probably early 20th century. No original blanks if called for else collates as complete in 312pp numbered. pp.66-73 with some marginalia; this is the first few leaves of book one of the Aeneid. These notes are in an early Latin hand, probably 17th century. Both boards are securely attached without significant wear to joints or hinges. Binding is secure and generally without shelf lean. Page edges very good with very minor discolouration. Occasional minor dampstaining but with the significant majority of the text block in excellent condition. An excellent book.
