Bookplate of "Thomas H. Cox, Maulesden" with the motto "Praemium Virtutis Honor" (honour is the reward of virtue) above the image of a muscular arm holding a raised anchor.
Thomas Hunter Cox (1818-1892) was born in Scotland to James and Helen Cox. The Cox family were known for being a part of the linen industry and for their charitable donations of public buildings such as libraries, leisure centres, and of the Lochee public park. He is recorded to have bought the Maulesden estate, as mentioned in the bookplate, around 1870 from Colonel Lauderdale Maule's representatives.
Also an ink ownership inscription of "D. Methuen".

Condition:
Half morocco over marbled paper backed boards with tooled labels between raised bands in compartments, other compartments with gilt tooling designs. Spines with occasional rubbing, more so to extremities. Some rubbing to head and bottoms of spine, more so to volume ten. All boards securely attached with very minor wear to joints and hinges. Boards very lightly scuffed. Minor shelf and edge wear. Page edges marbled. No shelf lean when placed together on the shelf, and shows very well. Bookplate attached to front pastedown in all volumes. Ink ownership inscription to front blank in all volumes. Text blocks very clean with light toning and occasional foxing. Plates transferred onto pages opposite. A stunning set.
