FIRST COLLECTION EDITION OF THE WORKS OF THACKERAY, INCLUDING THE SCARCE VOLUMES 23 & 24 WHICH WERE ISSUED IN 1886.
 A beautiful large set of the works of W.M. Thackeray bound into 24 volumes including Vanity Fair, Pendennis, The Virginians, etc. This is one of very few editions to include the full set of Thackeray's original illustrations which are very rarely reproduced in their entirety.

Condition: 

Uniform half calf over marbled boards. Spines decorated with intricate gilt tooling in compartments between raised bands, each volume retaining both green and olive tooled morocco labels. A little rubbing to spines with some discolouration to the lower compartments of volumes 3-4, 7, and 11 and the upper of volumes 6 and 13. A very attractive set on the shelf. All boards are securely attached with joints a little rubbed as typical. Shelf wear with occasional scuffs to extremities of boards and corners. All edges marbled, very good or better. Without attached bookplates. Bindings signed by Bickers & Son at head of each ffep. Endpapers and first and last few pp foxed (including many title pages) else generally fairly clean through the volumes, some with a few spots of foxing throughout and to the illustrations as typical, as well as many of the plates being oxidised as typical.
