Contemporary full Cambridge panelled bindings, spines very finely tooled in gilt. The bindings are in incredible condition and in a remarkable state of preservation. A little rubbed with typical shelf wear, etc., but with the gilt remaining bright and attractive, without loss to the leather. All boards are securely attached with some minor rubbing to joints and the typical minor cracks to hinges, but the bindings are very secure and stand without shelf lean. The boards bow out slightly as bound. Page edges very good, top edges uniformly dulled as typical. Without any attached bookplates or ownership inscriptions, though both volumes have a pencil shelf reference mark to ffep versos. Some minor foxing to endpaper blanks and pastedowns, toned, else generally exceptionally clean throughout both text blocks. The fold out frontispiece is present and without rips or tears.  Advertisements on the rear of 8M2. Easily the best obtainable copy of this set in stunning contemporary bindings.
