The Works of William Makepeace Thackeray in Thirteen Volumes. London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1887-1890.

-------------------

A lovely set of the works of Thackeray finely bound in uniform half morocco with the titles tooled in gilt to each spine, very attractive on the shelf. This set lacks the final volume but generally appears complete on the shelf because the volume numbering proceeds continuously, but it does lack volume thirteen which would have contained Miscellaneous Essays.

Condition:

[half title, t.p., engraved t.p., 6pp., pp.1-672]; [half title, t.p., frontis, t.p., 6pp., pp.1-744]; [half title, t.p., frontis, t.p., 2pp., pp.1-776]; [half title, t.p., frontis, t.p., 8pp., pp.1-667]; [half title, t.p., frontis, t.p., 6pp., pp.1-770]; [half title, t.p., frontis, t.p., 6pp., pp.1-622]; [half title, frontis, t.p., t.p., 8pp., pp.1-706]; [half title, t.p., frontis, t.p., 6pp., pp.1-627]; [half title, t.p., frontis, t.p., 10pp., pp.1-643]; [half title, t.p., frontis, t.p., 6pp., pp.1-632]; [half title, t.p., frontis, t.p., 8pp., pp.1-688]; [half title, t.p., frontis, t.p., 4pp., pp.1-328]

Contemporary uniform half morocco over marbled paper backed boards. Titles tooled in gilt to spines between raised bands. The set shows very attractively on the shelf indeed. Some small white spots to the spines of each volume, more so to the first two. Bindings without any sunning. Light rubbing and wear with all boards securely attached, the set is without shelf lean. Top page edges uniformly dulled as typical. The occasional scratch and scuffs to boards with most being very good or better. Light shelf and edge wear with very minor losses at corners, but generally without deformity, such that each volume is structurally sound. Without any attached bookplates, but with an ink gift inscription, "from father and mother to their daughter (name illegible), on her 22nd birthday January 4th 1893", else, generally clean throughout, most volumes with the pencil word "stock" to the final page. Generally very clean throughout each text block, mildly toned, but largely free from the typical impediments (foxing, etc.). A lovely set, lacking the last volume.
