Provenance:
Armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Green, a 19th and early 20th century British MP based in Stowmarket, Thurston, and Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. He was most likely the original purchaser and the one who commissioned these rather lovely fine bindings from Sotheran & Co. Thereafter in the collection of The City of Wakefield Art Gallery and Museum, thence deaccessioned.

Condition:
Contemporary full tree calf bindings by Sotheran & Co, signed in gilt to the attractive turn-ins. Spines uniformly sunned, minor rubbing, a few scuffs, but overall an extremely attractive set. All boards securely attached, bindings secure and stand without shelf lean. Bookplate to front pastedowns of Sir Edward Green and another bookplate to ffep recto of the City of Wakefield Art Gallery and Museum (without any further ex-libris marks). Text blocks very clean throughout, essentially in fine condition, free of foxing, stains, etc. One plate as a frontispiece to the first three volumes (two portraits and a facsimile of Shakespeare's four known signatures). Contemporary small sticker to rear board of each volume. A magnificent set of Shakespeare's Works.
