Picturesque Views on the Upper, or Warwickshire Avon, From its Source at Naseby to its Junction with the Severn at Tewkesbury: with Observations on the Public Buildings, and Other Works of Art in its Vicinity. By Samuel Ireland. London: R. Faulder, 1795.

FIRST EDITION OF SAMUEL IRELAND'S IMPORTANT ILLUSTRATED WORK OF VIEWS ON THE RIVER AVON.

-------------------

A beautiful work with a particularly nice aquatint title page, abundantly illustrated throughout. This example in a particularly attractive binding and atypically complete with both the scarce half title and errata leaf.

Size: 175 x 235 mm (approx.)

Condition:

[(3), v-xviii, 284pp, i]

Rebacked circa the mid 19th century preserving the majority of the contemporary, perhaps original, backstrip. A very attractive example on the shelf. Tooled red morocco label slightly coming loose at the corners but shows very nicely indeed. Spine a little dulled with minor gilt loss, rubbed. Shelf and edge wear with very minor loss/deformation to corners. Both boards are securely attached with the binding secure and without shelf lean. Top page edge dulled as typical, others very good, marbled matching the marbled paper backed boards. Collates as complete with the half title and final errata leaf which are usually lacking, indeed OCLC suggests that these are almost always lacking, citing only the British Library copy complete with these. Majority of the text block clean, minor foxing to the illustrated plates and tissue guards, heaviest to the tissue guard of the engraved title page. The majority of the plates are very clean.

A lovely copy of this scarce first edition.
