[William Cavendish] Des welt-beruhmten Hertzog Wilhelms von Newcastle neu-eröffnete Reit-Bahn [...]. Nurnberg: Johann Ziegers and Georg Lehmanns, 1700, folio.

-------------------

RARE complete with all the finely engraved plates as with the present example. The majority of extant copies are lacking several plates, often dozens. The present copy includes all 82 copperplate engravings, including the additional title and dedication, most of which are double-page, as well as seven in-text engravings. This is a Continental translation of this work, here with the text in German and French.

We can trace just two other complete copies in commerce: Ketterer Kunst 20 May 2008 lot 31 (4,800 EUR), and PBA Galleries 27 May 2010 lot 36 ($3,750 USD). The present example is an ideal copy, complete and in an attractive contemporary binding with the text and plates generally bright and fresh.

Size: 229 x 352 mm (approx.)

Condition:

Contemporary full marbled calf binding, plausibly English, repeating gilt motif in compartments between raised bands. Original tooled red morocco label extant, reading 'Le Parfait Ecuyer'. Binding mildly rubbed, minor shelf and edge wear, corners lightly bumped, else externally well-preserved and attractive. Joints secure with both boards securely attached, hinges not cracked. Bookplate to front pastedown overlaid over an earlier one. Remnants of a printed exhibition (?) leaf to front free endpaper recto dated 1832. The full suite of 82 finely engraved plates, many of which are very large and folding, is present. Leaves *4, **1 repaired with minor text loss, plate 9 with a repair, closed tears to plate 10 and Q2, some with wear at folds and edges, else bright and clean throughout the text and plates, occasional offsetting as typical, but mild, small faded mostly imperceptible dampstain confined to bottom blank marginal space of the concluding few quires of the text block.

An ideal copy of this very attractive work.
